A Republic of Korea Navy senior chief petty officer who saved the life of a middle school girl last month at the Yeongsan River, South Jeolla Province, was given the LG humanitarian award.

According to the LG Foundation, the 44-year-old Lim Kyung-jin was driving past the river with his wife on the afternoon of July 18 when he saw a middle school girl sitting down with her shoes off.

Lim said he felt a sense that something was not right and took a U-turn towards where the student was located. However, once he arrived she had already jumped into the river.

Lim hurriedly put on the life vest in his car, swam 150 meters into the river to save the student and handed her over to the 119 emergency rescue crew. Luckily the student's life was not in jeopardy.

"I felt a sense of danger after seeing the student and all I could think was I needed to save her," Lim said. "As a parent myself, I did what was necessary, and as a professional soldier I will not hesitate to save a civilian's life."

"We gave the award to highlight senior chief petty officer Lim's pure sense of duty of not hesitating to risk his own life to save a civilian," an LG Foundation official said.

The LG humanitarian award started in 2015 to better input former Chairman Koo Bon-moo's will. Koo Bon-moo was the grandson of company founder Koo In-hwoi.

"For those who sacrifice themselves for the nation and social justice, we will do our part to repay them as part of our corporate social responsibility," Koo used to say.

So far, 125 people have received the LG humanitarian award.
