LG Reveals More On Its New Dolby Vision Gaming OLED TV Update - Including Wider Model Support - Forbes

As I reported over the weekend, at the end of last week a firmware update for LG’s C1 and G1 OLED TVs appeared on LG websites in some territories that introduced - or perhaps a better way of putting it would be unlocked - support for Xbox Series X games in Dolby Vision at 4K resolutions and 120Hz refresh rates. Prior to the update, the Series X’s 4K TV Details tool only recognized the C1 and G1 OLEDs as capable of handling Dolby Vision at 4K 60Hz.

Now LG has provided me with more detail on its new update, including extra game-friendly features beyond the headline-grabbing 4K/120Hz Dolby Vision compatibility, and an expansion of the TV models that can expect to soon receive the 4K/120 Dolby Vision update.

The first thing to say about last week’s 03.11.23 update is that it’s going to be superseded by another update as early as the end of this week. In most territories this update will be numbered 3.15.27, and will introduce alongside the Dolby Vision at 4K/120 support a new look for the Game Optimiser and a new Game dashboard.

The new Game Optimizer screen will, as LG puts it, look more like a game, with a more graphical approach and a choice of orange, violet or green colour schemes. The new Game Dashboard is a simple, at a glance panel you can call up at the bottom of the screen to check which gaming graphics features are in play at any given moment.

You will still be able to manually select the genre of the game you’re playing from this dashboard, but for more in-depth adjustments you’ll need to head to the full Game Optimizer menu screen (which you will be able to jump to from the new Dashboard).

LG has also confirmed the news that I added via a later update to my original story over the weekend: that the new update additionally makes it possible for the C1 and G1 OLEDs to support AMD Freesync and Dolby Vision simultaneously. This had not - possibly for HDMI EDID reasons - been possible before.

Update 3.15.27 will additionally introduce more Gallery images for C1 and G1 users to draw from if they want to leave their TV looking like an artwork rather than an empty black screen when they’re not watching it. But it will surely be the new gaming features that cause the most excitement among the LG OLED community.

If you’re an LG TV-owning gaming enthusiast but you don’t have a C1 or G1, there’s potentially good news for you too. LG has told me that at some point in the next month or so, Beta software carrying the Dolby Vision 4K/120 support will be made available for other 2021 AND 2020 LG OLED TVs. LG can’t confirm the full range of these extra models yet, but it can say that the 2020 CX and GX OLED models will definitely be among them.

It’s not 100% clear if the Dolby Vision beta update for other OLEDs beyond the C1 and G1 will also unlock simultaneous Freesync/Dolby Vision support, but LG has promised to confirm this as soon as possible and I’ll update this story when it does.

One catch with this new Beta software for non C1/G1 LG OLED TV models is that it won’t be available either on LG’s websites, or via OTA updates. You’ll only be able to get it by requesting it directly from your local LG service centers. Obviously when the software reaches its finished/fully tested state it will be released online and via OTA updates as normal. But LG wanted to give gamers keen to get their hands on the new features as soon as possible a way of getting them in Beta form without having to wait.

LG’s latest announcement obviously won’t have calmed the nerves of owners of the brand’s 2019 9 series OLEDs wondering if they’re going to get a Dolby Vision 4K/120Hz update. LG did stress to me, though, that it is still exploring the possibility of adding the feature to these older but still extremely game-friendly TVs.

Keep an eye on my Twitter feed for further updates on exactly when these new Beta updates come online, and the full list of the LG TVs they will cover.
