LG OLEDs Become The First TVs To Offer Full Xbox Series X Dolby Vision Support - Forbes

When Xbox started rolling out Dolby Vision HDR gaming support to Xbox Series X consoles enrolled in the Alpha test ring back in May, it threw up an unexpected problem. According to the information shown on the console’s 4K TV Details page, which shows what video outputs your TV can support, no TVs were capable of handling Dolby Vision in 4K at 120Hz.

Now, though, I’ve received numerous reports from LG OLED TV owners to tell me that following a firmware update that started rolling out on June 17, LG’s 2021 C1 and G1 OLED TV series have become the first TVs to not just offer support for Dolby Vision 4K at 120Hz, but also score green ticks of compatibility for every single one of the Xbox Series X’s capabilities.

LG promised back in May when I raised the lack of Dolby Vision 4K 120Hz support with it that it would deliver a fix, and it appears that update 03.11.23 lives up to that promise.

Once you’ve installed the update (which appears to be rolling out in numerous territories OTA, or can be downloaded for installation from USB drives from the Software & Drivers support section of some territories’ LG websites), heading into the Xbox Series X 4K TV Details screen no longer shows the dreaded red cross appearing against Dolby Vision 4K 120Hz. In fact, owners of upgraded C1 and G1 TVs are able to bathe in the glory of the first full roster of green ticks we’ve seen since the Xbox Dolby Vision gaming update appeared.

If you haven’t had the chance to experience Dolby Vision gaming on the Xbox Series X for yourself yet, you may be thinking that none of this really matters yet given that there are currently no Xbox Series X games that implement Dolby Vision in their graphics engines. However, the way Dolby Vision gaming is currently implemented on the Xbox Series X means that any game that supports HDR, even those made in the more basic HDR10 format (ie, all of them), appear as Dolby Vision sources to Dolby Vision-compatible TVs.

MORE FOR YOU

So if owners of Alpha Ring Xbox Series X consoles fire up an HDR10 game that supports 4K at 120Hz, such as Call Of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War, it will now appear on updated LG C1 and G1 OLED TVs in Dolby Vision at its maximum 4K resolution and 120Hz frame rate.

There’s no sign yet of a similar update being rolled out to older LG OLEDs, but I’d say from experience that there’s at least a decent chance that CX and C9 owners will get a similar 4K 120Hz Dolby Vision update at some point now that the latest models have been taken care of.

LG’s swift update also raises hopes that other TVs capable of both 4K at 120Hz and Dolby Vision HDR might be able to bring the two features together with Xbox Series X games via firmware upgrades of their own in the not too distant future.

For now, though, we have to give props to LG once again for continuing to lead the way in delivering cutting-edge gaming experiences on its premium TVs.

[UPDATE: It appears that the new C1 and G1 firmware update also fixes an issue where it wasn’t possible to enjoy AMD FreeSync and Dolby Vision simultaneously from your Xbox Series X.]
