Memorial Day weekend is typically one of the best times of the year to shop for large appliances, and retailers often start their sales a week or two ahead of the long weekend.
This year, due to residual pandemic-related inventory issues, holiday weekend sales aren’t going to be nearly as abundant as in years past. In 2020, the pandemic created a heightened demand for large appliances. This led to many items going out of stock and others taking weeks, if not months longer to ship. Sales became sparse if not nonexistent, as retailers had no need to discount inventory that was already selling steadily at full price.
And while inventory levels are slowly rebounding, this year’s appliance sales are going to be affected as well. We spoke with a few experts about the state of appliance sales, and they all agree that while there may be more sales this year compared with 2020, overall the discounts won’t be quite as large or plentiful as they were before the pandemic. Mark Davis, an associate analyst covering refrigerators and ranges for Gap Intelligence in San Diego, told us retailers have been offering fewer and smaller discounts in recent months, and the same trend is expected for Memorial Day. However, he pointed out other offers such as free shipping and installation, have become more common in an effort to make up for less direct savings.
