LG transparent OLED aids service by robotic barista - AV Magazine

LG transparent OLED has been installed in a robotic coffee kiosk in Singapore in front of the robot arms that prepare customers’ coffee.

Customers can see through the display to spaces that were once hidden, showing the robotic barista, named “Ella”, at work. The transparent display also enables rich digital signage content to be shown while customers watch the robot which can make 200 cups of coffee an hour.

Ella is named after the wife of Crown Group found and chief executive Keith Tan, whose Crown Coffee subsidiary operates the outlet. The kiosk has been in development for some time, with the company being the first in Asia to receive transparent OLED, having been allocated two prototype units two years ago after Tan placed a call to LG Electronics.

The kiosk then opened late last year, with the Singapore minister for culture, community and youth in attendance to support the importance of digitalisation and automation.

At the time, Crown Coffee said it would reduce physical interaction in the light of the coronavirus pandemic and payment is made by mobile app. It was expected that the robotic coffee kiosk would be most useful at transport interchanges such as stations and airports, with the kiosk developed as a pre-emptive responses to digital disruption and to the rising cost of labour.

A video of the transparent OLED and robotic barista have been released by LG this week.
