As if getting their 2021 range of TVs ready for launch wasn’t keeping them busy enough, LG’s TV engineers have also been working on ways of tackling the issue of raised near blacks on their 2019 and 2020 OLED TVs when gaming in variable refresh rates.
That effort has today resulted in the announcement of a firmware update for LG’s 2020 OLED models that’s claimed to improve the raised black issue using a new ‘Fine Tune Dark Areas’ adjustment.
As its rather prosaic name suggests, the new Fine Tune Dark Areas feature (which also be available at launch on LG’s 2021 OLED TVs) enables gamers to adjust how the dark areas of gaming images look without the adjustments also impacting bright parts of the image. So if you notice dark areas of the image shifting to a lighter tone on your 2020 LG OLED set when it’s triggered into VRR mode, you can use the Fine Tune Dark Areas feature to dial the black level down again.
Since the new Fine Tune Dark Areas feature can work in both directions - as in, you can make dark areas look lighter as well as darker - it seems that it may not have been solely developed to improve the VRR raised near blacks issue. Its main intention was likely to give gamers a way of being able to spot enemies hiding in dark areas more easily. Still, if the feature does what LG says it does and mitigates an issue that’s frustrated many (otherwise very happy) LG OLED-owning gamers over the past few months, that will be a seriously welcome side effect. So long as it doesn’t cause other issues elsewhere, of course.
The firmware update will start rolling out from today in the US and Europe, and will be available for BX, CX, GX and ZX models. The relevant firmware update numbers will be the same for both the US and Europe, and are as follows:
ZX: 03.11.40
GX and CX: 03.21.18
MORE FOR YOU
BX: 03.21.80
As always, LG will be staggering the update rollout, so don’t be alarmed if you own one of those TVs and don’t get the update right away. If you’re impatient, though, LG says the update should be available from its support websites if you’re too impatient to wait for the automatic update to arrive.
Once the update has completed, you will find the Fine Tune Dark Areas feature in the Picture>Additional Settings menu.
If you own a 2019 LG OLED TV which exhibits the same VRR near black shift problem, LG has told me that it is working to support 2019 TVs with the same new feature too, but can’t yet confirm a launch date.
Owners of 2020 LG OLED TVs in the UK will also get a second fix from the new update that addresses an issue where videos looped to play automatically within the iTV streaming app would quit playback if they were interrupted by an advert.
