As I reported on New Year’s Eve, a new firmware update for LG’s CX OLED TVs caused the sets’ Game mode to lose substantial amounts of brightness. Typically gamers reported drops of between 100 and 150 nits - or around 20-25% - from the sort of brightness levels they could experience prior to firmware number 03.21.09 being installed on the impacted models.
Disappointed gamers will be pleased to hear that LG has already come back to me about the problem, not only with an acknowledgement that the issue exists, but also a pledge to get it fixed via a further firmware update within weeks.
Here’s LG’s statement in full:
“LG has been made aware that its latest firmware release impacted the maximum brightness in gaming mode on some 2020 TV models.
A new firmware will be released in the upcoming weeks to correct the brightness level, while maintaining the improvements in handling HDR and colour banding addressed by the current firmware.
Thank you for your patience and we apologise for any inconvenience.”
It’s great to see LG specifically promising in its statement not to let the changes it will be making to the Game preset remove the welcome improvements that firmware 03.21.09 introduced in other performance areas. So issues such as raised black levels with Dolby Vision content, eARC handshake problems and colour banding when streaming via the TVs’ internal apps that 03.21.09 fixed should stay fixed once the dim gaming mode firmware solution turns up.
MORE FOR YOU
I’ve seen mixed reports about whether update 03.21.09 also fixed or actually made worse the CX OLEDs issue with raised black levels when gaming in variable refresh rates. So it will be interesting to see what happens with regard to that once LG restores Game mode brightness to its former levels.
LG doesn’t mention in its response whether reducing the Game mode brightness with update 03.21.09 was an accidental side effect of the firmware’s other changes, or a deliberate move that it’s now decided to roll back based on negative consumer feedback. The main thing, though, is that LG has listened to the complaints and is promising what is by current AV standards a pretty swift resolution.
