LG OLEDs Become Official TV Partners For The Xbox Series X - Forbes

South Korean brand LG Electronics has been impressively relentless over the past two years in striving to make its OLED TVs ready for the next generation of video game technology. There have been hiccups along the way for sure, but LG’s perseverance is now paying off handsomely in the shape of robust sales to gamers of its latest OLED TVs and now an official marketing partnership with Microsoft’s spectacular new Xbox Series X console.

The new LG/Microsoft deal will see LG OLED TVs and Xbox Series X consoles appearing together at special retailer events so that, according to LG’s press release about the partnership today, “customers are able to experience first hand the immersive exhilaration of gaming on LG’s 2020 OLED TV models and Xbox’s latest console”.

Since 2019’s C9 series, LG’s OLED TVs have supported key next-generation gaming features such as variable refresh rates, 4K playback at 120Hz refresh rates and automatic low latency mode switching (so your TV toggles between video and game presets depending on what you’re using your console or PC for).

These key next-gen gaming features are backed up on LG’s latest OLED TVs, too, by input lag (the time a screen takes to render images) figures as low as 12ms; built-in playback of the Dolby Atmos audio mixes available on Series X games now and the Dolby Vision HDR format coming to Series X games from 2021; support for the eARC HDMI system for passing lossless Dolby Atmos audio out from the TV to connected soundbars and AV receivers; and support for the so-called ‘HGiG’ initiative for delivering improved HDR gaming experiences.

It’s notable, too, that LG OLED TVs provide next-gen gaming support across all of their HDMI ports, whereas even the small number of TVs from other brands that support most next-gen gaming features only tend to offer that support over one or two HDMIs.

The PS5, of course, has Sony’s own TVs to partner with. Though in a situation that underlines LG’s gaming strengths, actually only a single series of models from Sony’s 2020 TV range, the X90Hes, will actually support all the same next-gen gaming features that LG’s OLED TVs do.
