As I reported over the weekend, PC gamers have been experiencing a couple of significant problems when trying to use some of the high-end features of their new RTX 30 graphics cards with LG’s 2019 and 2020 OLED TVs. Happily, LG has already announced that it believes it can solve both problems, and intends to do so via a firmware update it intends to roll out ‘in the next few weeks’.
For those who missed my earlier story about the problems, they involve LG’s 2019 and 2020 OLEDs only showing a black screen when RTX 30 users try to activate G-Sync variable refresh rate technology on 120Hz outputs, regardless of bit depth or resolution; and LG’s 2020 OLED TVs downsampling RGB/120Hz/4:4:4 feeds to lower quality 4:2:2.
Here’s LG’s full statement on the situation:
"LG has been made aware that some LG OLED TVs are experiencing certain compatibility issues with the recently launched Nvidia RTX 30 Series graphics card. An updated firmware has been in development with plans for a roll out within the next few weeks to LG's 2020 and 2019 HDMI 2.1 capable TVs, which should address these incompatibility issues. When ready, additional information will be available on the LG website and in the software update section of owners' LG TVs. We apologise for the inconvenience to our loyal customers and thank them for their support as we continue to push the boundaries of gaming technology and innovation.”
Given that it had originally seemed possible that the black screen issue, at least, was actually down to Nvidia rather than LG, I actually think it’s good news to see LG’s statement implying that its firmware update when it comes will fix BOTH of the reported issues. After all, experience shows that solutions to consumer technology problems almost always happen more quickly where one company can fix everything by itself, rather than two separate companies having to develop a solution together.
Gamers impacted by the issues will doubtless still be nervous until they’ve actually got the update installed and have seen it working correctly. At this point, though, it seems as if this is one consumer electronics compatibility issue that’s going to enjoy a positive outcome.
