First announced back in April and arriving in June, LG's Velvet is a departure from the norm for the company. First of all, it's ditching its familiar G- and V-series in favor of giving its phones names. Moreover, it says that it wants to deliver more than a simple spec bump. LG wants to provide meaningful upgrades, something that it's been promising to do for a couple of years now.
The Velvet seems to deliver on that, at least as far as the hardware goes. It uses a Snapdragon 765G chipset, so it sits high in the mid-range category, and it provides a lot of value for its price. It comes in a bunch of fancy colors like Illusion Sunset and Aurora Green. The model that LG sent me is called Aurora Gray.
LG also introduced its new raindrop camera design, which is meant to be more minimal and also stand out from the competition. There's been a lot of use of big camera housings, and rounded rectangles, and you won't find that here. Another thing that LG touted was the 3D Arc design, which makes the phone fit more easily into the user's hand.
There's that and more. It has a 6.8-inch 20.5:9 FHD P-OLED display, the 3D Sound Engine that was found in the V60, a 48-megapixel f/1.8 camera, and more. The Velvet hasn't been announced for the U.S. market yet, but it's coming and it should cost under $750, with some carriers offering it for $100 less than that. Check out the unboxing video below:
