LG to apply mobile tech to EV parts despite smartphone exit plan - Nikkei Asia

lg.indah.link

SEOUL -- LG Electronics on Friday said it would apply its mobile device technology to its home appliance and electric vehicle parts operations despite its plan to exit the smartphone market.

South Korea's second-largest electronics company said it was studying how to preserve its mobile technology, as it is key to further developing smart home appliances and auto parts. LG reiterated that the company was considering all options for its loss-making smartphone business, after CEO Brian Kwon sent an internal memo to its employees last week saying the time had come to make a decision about the unit's future.

"We are considering many ways to internalize our mobile device technologies," Seo Dong-myung, a director at the company, said in the fourth-quarter earnings conference call. "We will continue to study the mobile technology because it is core to our smart home appliances and auto parts."

LG also said it would work to get its EV parts joint venture with Canada's Magna International on track. The new company -- tentatively named LG Magna e-Powertrain -- will be launched in July. LG will control the venture with a 51% stake, while Magna will own the remaining 49%.

LG's operating profit soared 538.7% to 650.2 billion won ($580.9 million) in the fourth quarter from a year ago thanks to its home appliance and television divisions, which enjoyed strong demand amid the pandemic. Its sales rose 16.9% to 18.8 trillion won during the same period.

Revenue in its home appliance division grew 20% to 5.5 trillion won in the October-to-December period from a year ago as both its domestic and overseas markets saw double-digit growth.

But LG's smartphone business posted 248.5 billion won of operating loss for the October-to-December period, meaning it has been losing money for almost six straight years. LG's premium smartphones have failed to catch on with customers as Apple, Samsung and Huawei dominated the market.

LG acknowledged that sales of its premium products had slowed and that the company had also been suffering from a shortage of 4G chips. It added that competition would heat up next year in the global smartphone market, even though demand is expected to recover to the pre-pandemic level.

Unlike the gloomy outlook for its smartphone business, LG expects its EV parts business to grow more than 30% this year on the back of recovery in the global auto market. The company set a goal of a more than 5% operating profit margin in the vehicle component business this year.

Shares of LG Electronics plunged 6.99% on Friday as foreign investors dumped its stocks. South Korea's benchmark Kospi fell 3.03%.

Georgetown University Partners with LG to Enhance Collaboration Technology - Campus Safety Magazine

lg.indah.link

In 2019, Georgetown set out to find integrated technologies to support innovative teaching methods within its Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship.

CNDLS is equipped with 4K interactive LG touch displays, Logitech cameras, Biamp ceiling speakers and collaboration pods.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two decades ago, Georgetown University (GU) launched its Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS), one of the country’s first higher education programs aimed at bridging pedagogy and technological innovation. Jump ahead to 2019 and the CNDLS team was looking for a way to reimagine the learning space using collaborative technology. That’s where LG Business Solutions came in.

With help from the integration solutions provider and local technology integrator CTSI, the team introduced a multi-dimensional classroom to support small- and large-group exploration, interactivity and distance learning, according to a press release from the company.

“It’s not a typical classroom,” said Andy Bukowski, systems designer at CTSI. “From a professor’s perspective, Georgetown wanted to have a dual-display setup that could support remote participants on one screen and presentation material on the other. They also wanted a more typical single-display system you might see in a standard classroom. And they wanted to make it so smaller groups of students could gather around several different displays, connect and collaborate.”

The final design, which welcoming students and faculty in the fall of 2019, includes two 75-inch, 4K interactive LG touch displays and two 86-inch LG interactive 4K displays. The space also has:

  • Logitech cameras on each wall for connecting directly to GU’s Zoom video conferencing system
  • Biamp ceiling speakers and microphone arrays for tracking speakers in the room and optimizing audio on other ends of a Zoom session
  • 4 Mersive Solstice collaboration pods, which users can connect to wirelessly to share content on the room’s displays

“Many Georgetown classrooms have a big stage, a mothership of a desk and a screen that’s very clearly at the front of the room,” said CNDLS Managing Director Molly Chehak. “We took out the stage and the desk so there is no front of the classroom. All the displays can be used by anybody in the room — instructors and students alike. They offer a collaborative space where students can work together on the same screen or multiple screens at one time, comparing, contrasting and collaborating. In a lecture-style situation, a professor can use one or more as a confidence display, or set them up as a gallery walk.”

All of the technology in the room is managed through a Crestron control system and touch panel. For CTSI, the biggest challenge was designing the system to include remote participants who would appear on the LG displays through Zoom.

“If you’re familiar with most control systems, you basically need to leave that software to launch a Zoom session. That’s not practical for the people using the room,” said Bukowski. “We worked with Crestron and Zoom to modify the application programming interface and create intuitive buttons, so it felt seamless as the professor transitioned to conferences.”

When professors want to initiate a video conference, they select Zoom from the touch panel, tell the system where they want the remote participants displayed and where they want the presentation displayed, choose the screen and then control it through the LG touchscreen display.

“The changes we made to the classroom reflect the deep shift in pedagogy and the experience of education,” said Chehak. “It’s student-centered, collaboration-centered, it’s multifaceted and needs to allow for the outside to come inside, and the inside to go outside. Technology can do that.”

LG Electronics posts record earnings - MarketWatch

lg.indah.link

LG Electronics Inc. notched record earnings in the fourth quarter, thanks to brisk sales for televisions and home appliances amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The strong performance by the South Korean consumer-electronics giant suggests extended periods of staying and working at home amid the pandemic provided strong support for demand.

Net profit for the quarter was 262.30 billion Korean won ($235.6 million), compared with net loss of KRW849.80 billion in the same quarter a year earlier, the company said Friday.

That was below a FactSet consensus forecast for net profit of KRW287.18 billion.

Fourth-quarter revenue rose 17% to KRW18.781 trillion, while operating profit jumped six-fold to KRW650.20 billion.

For 2020, net profit surged 11-fold to KRW2.064 trillion. Revenue rose 1.5% to KRW63.262 trillion, while operating profit jumped 31% to KRW3.195 trillion.

LG Electronics said its latest earnings set records for the quarter and the year, as the home-appliance and premium TV segments, among others, maintained solid growth.

The company said its smartphone business remained sluggish through the year. LG recently suggested a possible disposal of the segment, which has been in the red for nearly six years.

T-Mobile's exclusive LG Velvet 5G quietly scores permanent price cut - PhoneArena

lg.indah.link
Whether or not LG will decide to throw in the mobile towel at some point this year and sell its long-struggling smartphone business to the highest bidder among a rumored group of at least five prospective buyers, one of the company's 2020 handsets should still find a place on many shopping lists put together by early 5G adopters on tight budgets.
We're talking, of course, about the gorgeous 6.8-inch Velvet, which is arguably one of the best inexpensive 5G-capable Android options available on all three big US carriers right now. Interestingly, each major wireless service provider sells a slightly different version of the upper mid-range giant, with Verizon charging a premium for Ultra Wideband support and T-Mobile scoring global exclusivity over a special edition powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1000C processor rather than Qualcomm's hugely popular Snapdragon 765.
While the "Un-carrier" originally priced its exclusive LG Velvet 5G extremely close to AT&T's "regular" model, said $588 tag appears to have recently dropped to $396 with absolutely no fanfare. That means new and old T-Mo customers can now pay over 200 bucks less than their Ma Bell-subscribing counterparts for essentially the same phone.
The greatest thing about this "deal" is undoubtedly that... it's not actually a deal per se, but more likely a permanent affair. Similar to the quirky LG Wing just a couple of weeks ago and the mainstream high-end V60 ThinQ several months back, the Magenta-flavored LG Velvet is pretty much guaranteed to settle at its newly reduced price for good.
If you were hesitant to spend nearly six Benjamins on this low and mid-band 5G-supporting beaut, it is now very difficult to argue with the handset's value for money and competitiveness against the likes of the $399.99 REVVL 5G or Samsung's $504 Galaxy A51 5G
In addition to a stunning design and reasonably powerful SoC, the LG Velvet 5G also has a sharp P-OLED display with a discreet notch going for it, as well as plenty of juice in the old tank (4,000mAh battery capacity, to be specific), three solid rear-facing cameras, 6 gigs of RAM, 128 gigs of internal storage space, a microSD card slot, headphone jack, and wireless charging capabilities.

LG Business Solutions Unveils Two New dvLED Series - rAVe [PUBS]

lg.indah.link

lg business solutions ultra slim

LG Business Solutions has unveiled two new indoor direct-view light-emitting diode (DVLED) display series, the Versatile LSCA and the Ultra Slim LSCB, which will offer options ideal for indoor environments such as office lobbies, shopping malls, hotels, transit hubs and stadiums.

Both the LSCA and LSCB will ship with LG’s new CVCA controller and webOS Signage platform. This will deliver advanced viewing options from multiple inputs and simplified system control. LG’s webOS Signage smart platform features a Quad-Core System-on-Chip design that can execute several tasks to provide smooth content playback from baseband-connected high-resolution video sources, the built-in media player, or the built-in video streaming decoder. The controller also has 3.6 GB of storage for applications and content and a TV-style remote control with an intuitive user interface that puts system and image control in the palm of your hand.

The Versatile LSCA Series is designed for fixed installation and provides users with a dvLED option ideal for larger public installations and with a viewing distance of 15 feet or more — such as transit hubs, stadiums and other larger venues — thanks to pixel pitch models of 2.97 millimeters or 3.91 millimeter with a capability of 1,000 nits of brightness. Offered in both 1:1 (5000-millimeter square) and 2:1 (500-millimeter x 1000-millimeter rectangle) cabinet options, the square and rectangle cabinets can be mixed and matched for greater customization. Magnets on the top and bottom, positioning pins, handles and fast locks on the cabinets help installers easily set up and dismantle without additional tools, features that are especially valuable to installers working with rentals or in staging where fast installation and cleanup is imperative. For easy maintenance or service, the cabinets also offer either front access or rear access, allowing customers to choose installation options according to their environment.

LSCA 3

The Ultra Slim LSCB Series — ideal for close-up viewing such as shopping malls, board rooms and hotel lobbies and designed specifically to be flexible for rentals and staging — features three dvLED models with pixel pitches of 1.56-millimeter, 1.88-mm and 2.50mm. The display combines an incredibly low-profile and lightweight design with an edge thickness of 37.5mm making it ideal for spaces where space is a concern. The display is capable of 800 nits of brightness and uses the widely used 16:9 aspect ratio, minimizing time and costs associated with content redevelopment. The cabinet also offers front servicing. The Ultra Slim LSCB Series is EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) Class B certified, meaning it is not only perfect for industrial environments, but it also passes the even stricter emissions standards for residential areas. Thus, the EMC rating does not limit where the LSCB can be installed.

Each model also has an optional add-on 90-degree corner design feature that minimizes discontinuity of content displayed around corners.

Both new series are available with LG’s trio of customer care services:

  • LG ExtendedCare Warranty: LG’s extended warranty which can give up to five years coverage
  • LG ConnectedCare Remote Monitoring: LG’s network-based solution that allows remote system monitoring
  • LG TotalCare Health Checks: LG’s twice-per-year, on-site health check and system inspection
