LG Wing and Pixel 5 owners have something to look forward to: the Federal Communications Commission has approved these devices to use faster C-band 5G frequencies, according to a PCMag tipster. The two phones have joined an exclusive company made up of some of the first devices approved to use the new frequencies. Samsung’s Galaxy S21 phones and the iPhone 12 lineup are the only others that currently offer support for these frequencies in the US.

C-band will deliver a much-needed speed boost to 5G in the US, particularly for Verizon and AT&T customers. Currently, their nationwide networks rely mostly on slower low-band spectrum. This swath of so-called mid-band frequencies went up for auction at the end of 2020, and US carriers bid a record $80.9 billion to secure blocks of spectrum for their use.

These frequencies won’t be available for use until late 2021 / early 2022, but LG and Google appear to be getting ahead of the curve. With this FCC approval, the companies can offer software updates to enable the use of C-band frequencies on these specific devices.

As things stand now, not every 5G phone works with every kind of 5G frequency. Some devices, particularly budget models, support only low- and mid-band. Others are also compatible with high-band like Verizon’s Ultra Wideband, which the carrier indicates by selling certain models branded as “UW.” C-band will complicate things even more; manufacturers need to get FCC approval to retroactively add support to their existing devices so they can take advantage of the new spectrum.

No doubt C-band will be a welcome addition to 5G networks in the US, but it’s one more thing to be aware of if you plan to buy a new phone this year. T-Mobile customers won’t need to worry as much since that carrier’s network already uses other mid-band frequencies. But if you’re on Verizon or AT&T and plan on hanging on to your phone for a few years, it’s worth getting a device that either supports C-band now or will in the future.

Unlocking a bootloader, rooting a device, and flashing custom ROMs are popular hobbies here on XDA. Many users hold the ability to root in high regards, and almost find no interest in phones if they are not able to be bootloader unlocked. LG, however, has a storied history with regards to bootloader unlocking — namely, the Korean OEM prefers to allow only a handful of models to be unlocked by end-users (probably due to requirements from carriers). The modding community isn’t happy with LG’s stance, and now it seems that our impatient users found an unofficial bootloader unlock method that can be applied on nearly every variant of the LG G8 ThinQ, LG G8S ThinQ, LG G8X ThinQ, and the LG V50 ThinQ.

Based on input from XDA Senior Member cloud1250000, XDA Member Seasee606 has come up with a really innovative process to unlock the bootloader of the LG G8/G8S/G8X or the LG V50 ThinQ. However, the unofficial method isn’t as simple as you may think. It makes use of a leaked engineering bootloader, which requires you to force the target device to boot to the Qualcomm SoC’s Emergency Download Mode (EDL) and perform several low-level flashing jobs.

The underlying concept of this method is pretty much like the one used for the Sprint LG G8 ThinQ bootloader unlocking process, minus the initial part where you need to gain temporary root access using an exploit. In a nutshell, the new method doesn’t require a specific firmware, and it is even compatible with the Verizon variant of the LG G8. The engineering bootloader essentially puts the devices into a state where they are capable of accepting the regular fastboot oem unlock command without a token generated from LG’s official unlocking server.

Since the process is a bit tricky and requires flashing via EDL mode, it’s safe to say that it isn’t meant for beginners and will most definitely void the warranty. If you want to proceed anyway, do read the thread and opening post very carefully, and execute steps with utmost precision.

LG isn’t waiting for Microsoft to update Your Phone to support its handsets. Softpedia reports that LG has quietly released a Virtoo app (Android, Windows) that can sync its phone lineup with Windows 10 PCs.

As you’d expect, the sync app brings calls, contacts, and text messages to your Windows PC’s screen. You can even mirror your screen to run Android apps directly from your computer. These aren’t radical features, but they simply weren’t available for LG phone users before — this fills much of the gap.

Whether or not your particular phone will sync with a Windows PC isn’t clear. The Android app supports phones running 5.0 Lollipop and later, but LG cautioned that some devices “may not support” Virtoo or some of its functions. We’ve asked LG for a detailed compatibility list, but it’s safe to say that a recent phone like the Velvet is more likely to work than a years-old budget model.

If it does run for you, however, it could be an important app. With many people still working from home during the pandemic, you might sit in front of your PC much more often than your phone — the Windows sync utility can help you keep tabs on your mobile life without having to reach for your handset.

LG has achieved a record profit of $2.85 billion in 2020, which is 31.1% more than in 2019, while revenue was $56.45 billion, according to results published by the company.

These figures - which were achieved thanks to solid growth in home products, OLED TVs, and automotive solutions — were also reflected in the fourth-quarter results, in which sales reached $16.76 billion, up 16.9% year-on-year and 11% more than the previous quarter.

Despite the impact of COVID-19, profits in the quarter stood at $580 million, up 539% versus the same period in 2019. However, the consequences of the pandemic and the slow economic recovery remain a concern for the company heading into 2021.

However, LG is hopeful for the "normalization of the global economy" thanks to the determined fiscal policies of governments around the world and the progressive implementation of vaccines.

LG's results by business division

LG Home Appliance & Air Solution ended the year with profits of $2.1 billion, the highest in its history, while increasing revenue by 3.5 % compared to 2019, to $19.87 billion.

Over the last 3 months, revenue reached $4.94 billion, showing a 20% growth compared to the same period last year, and double-digit increases in South Korea, North America, and Europe.

Its home division achieved annual revenue of $11.76 billion and a profit of $865 million, 22.9% more than a year ago.

As for the department's quarterly results, revenue was $3.82 billion, up 7.9% from the fourth quarter of 2019 and up 16.7% from the previous quarter. These good figures are due to strong sales growth in North America and Europe, which increased profit to $181.5 million.

LG is considering exiting the smartphone market due to poor results.

Meanwhile, its mobile division posted a 2020 revenue of $4.66 billion, while sales in the fourth quarter reached $1.24 billion, up 4.9% from the same period last year, but down 9.2% from the previous quarter due to the supply of 4G chips and a slowdown in sales of premium smartphones outside South Korea.

Total losses for the year stood at $750.6 million due to investment efforts in the marketing of the company's flagship devices, partially offset by a reduction in fixed costs.

The automotive components division managed, for its part, to increase its revenues by 6.1% over 2019 to $5.18 billion for the year as a whole.

For the fourth quarter, revenue stood at 1.71 billion dollars, 41.3% more than in the same period of the previous year, thanks to the recovery of demand in key markets such as North America and Europe and the increase in sales due to the emergence of new projects.

This brings the total result for the quarter to a loss of just $1.78 million, an improvement over the previous quarter and the same period in 2019.

Finally, its business division achieved a profit of $408.5 million, thanks to the growth in demand for IT products for remote work and online teaching, as a result of COVID-19. Revenue reached $5.36 billion, about almost 4.42 billion euros.

For the last quarter, the division posted an operating profit of $62.7 million dollars, slightly lower than the previous year's figure due to price increases in manufacturing components. Meanwhile, revenues in the last quarter reached $1.35 billion, 4.8% higher than in the same period of 2019.

The technology company expects the digital signage market to improve in the coming year as global demand recovers and for sales of IT products to maintain their solid growth. They are also confident that the results of its solar division will continue to progress thanks to the consistent increase in demand for renewable energy production.

The LG Wing soars on. The wildest phone of 2020 will get access to new C-band 5G frequencies that will make it run better and faster on Verizon in 2021 and 2022. The Google Pixel 5 also just got authorized to use these new airwaves, according to the FCC's website.

A tipster alerted us to postings about both of these phones at the commission. The filings are a "class 2 permissive change," which the government agency uses to authorize new radio abilities or frequency bands. In this case, the documents give LG and Google the green light to update software on the Wing and Pixel for the C-band.

US carriers just spent more than $80 billion licensing C-band frequencies, although we won't know for a few weeks how much each carrier got. With carriers likely getting tranches of 100MHz or more, C-band offers far better speeds than "nationwide" 5G from Verizon and AT&T, but with longer range than Verizon's speedy UWB 5G. C-band networks will likely begin to go online at the end of 2021 or early 2022.

The filings we saw specifically referred to the Verizon and AT&T version of the Wing (ZNFF100VM) and not the T-Mobile version. Analysts at Raymond James, cited by Light Reading, say Verizon was the biggest bidder for C-band airwaves, spending around $30 billion, while AT&T may have spent $20 billion. T-Mobile may have spent $11 billion, but it's less dependent on C-band because it already has similar mid-band airwaves.

There is only one version of the Pixel 5 in the FCC's database, and the change applies to that version. I didn't see any changes filed for the Pixel 4a 5G.

Currently, the Samsung Galaxy S21 and iPhone 12 line are the only other phones we've seen with C-band support on the US market.

Is LG In, Or Is It Out?

LG's update shows that the company has at least some ambitions in the US mobile market, a week after a leaked internal memo showed the CEO saying it might quit the smartphone business this year.

According to an earnings release, LG's mobile division lost $750 million in 2020, but the company as a whole made "record-setting operating profit" of $2.85 billion, primarily driven by home appliances and OLED TVs. LG was still the No. 3 smartphone vendor in the US in the third quarter of 2020, according to Counterpoint Research, with a 13% market share.

Google does not break out Pixel sales revenue, but the company does not figure in the top 5 US vendors as per Counterpoint Research. According to Wave7 Research's December sales report, the Pixel series was at 3% at Verizon stores in December, and below that at other carriers. Wave7 does not count direct sales by manufacturers, though.

The Microsoft Your Phone app has become useful too for many Windows 10 users by allowing them to pair their Android devices with PCs. Unfortunately, the amount of compatible devices on the list is still limited so LG has rolled out its own Windows 10 app to pair your LG handset with your PC.

According to a Softpedia report, LG is launching the new Windows 10 app as its mobile phone isn’t on the compatible list for the Microsoft Your Phone app, which supports devices like Samsung flagship handset. In other words, the South Korean tech giant isn’t waiting for Microsoft to bring its devices in the compatibility list but and is launching its own service, which will allow users to sync their smartphone with Windows 10 that is already live in the Microsoft Store at the moment.

The new app is called Virtoo, which utilizes Bluetooth to pair your PC with your smartphone. This also enabled the PC to gain access to certain smartphone functionalities directly from the computer. As per official notes, “Virtoo by LG is a smartphone app for LG PC users. It allows a Bluetooth connection between a smartphone and a PC to enable users to use various smartphone functions on the PC. Use Virtoo by LG to enjoy a more comfortable computing environment.”

Keep in mind, however, that not every LG handset model will be supported and not all features will be available for everybody. Meaning, there will be some limitations despite the company launching its own dedicated app to sync Windows 10 devices. Although, the new app will allow users to send messages from their PCs, access to the media stored on the phone, make calls, and even all contacts and allow screen mirroring as well.
