LG updates its 2021 OLED TVs to support 120Hz Dolby Vision gaming - Engadget

lg.indah.link

Microsoft's Xbox Series X and Series S consoles both support 4K Dolby Vision at 120 Hz, but there's a problem: so far, no TVs have supported all of those things things at once. Now, LG has announced that it's rolling out a firmware update that unlocks Dolby Vision HDR at 4K 120Hz on its latest 2021 C1 and G1 series OLED models.

We knew that LG's high-end G1 and mainstream C1 series should be capable of 120 Hz 4K gaming with Dolby Vision, as HDTV Test's Vincent Teoh pointed out recently. However, Xbox Series X owners have been reporting that those models weren't working, with an error message that "your TV setup doesn't support Dolby Vision at 4K 120 Hz."

LG told Teoh at the time that it was testing the functionality and working to bring it to market, and now it has done so with the firmware version 03.15.27. That makes the C1 and G1 series OLED TV models "the first in the world capable of supporting Dolby Vision HDR at 4K 120Hz on compatible platforms," the company said.

LG's latest OLED TVs are ready for 120Hz Dolby Vision gaming

LG

In addition, it's testing the feature on other 2021 models including the OLED Z1 series, QNED Mini LED QNED99 series and NanoCell NANO99 series, all slated to receive the update in July. "Additional 2021 and 2020 TV models are also being tested for Dolby Vision gaming in either 60Hz or 120Hz," the company added. There's no word on whether its 2019 OLED models, some of which also support both 4K 120Hz and Dolby Vision, will be updated.

Now, if you have an Xbox Series X or S console and 2021 LG G1 or S1 series TV, you'll be able to make the error message go away. However, you still won't be able to play any 4K 120Hz Dolby Vision games, because none exist at the moment. When they do eventually arrive, you should see not only more fluid playback, but brighter images, improved contrast and more vibrant, saturated colors — much as you do on Dolby Vision-encoded films and TV series.

Along with that feature, the new firmware also introduces the Game Dashboard (shown above), a floating menu that helps LG owners optimize settings. It works on any any 2021 LG TV with Game Optimizer, letting users switch between genres (standard, FPS, RPG or RTS). You'll also be able to see the status of modes like black stabilizer, low latency and variable refresh rate. The new update is now rolling out, so if you own a supported set, you should gain access to all of those features soon.

LG’s 27-inch 4K UltraFine Monitor sports an ergonomic stand at low of $500 (Save $99) - 9to5Toys

lg.indah.link

Amazon currently offers the LG 27-inch Ergo 4K UltraFine Monitor for $499.99 shipped. Also available at Newegg for the same price. Normally fetching $599, today’s offer amounts to $99 in savings, matches the all-time low set just once before, and is still one of the first discounts to date. LG’s 27-inch Ergo display stands out from other monitors on the market with a unique ergonomic stand that clamps to your desk. On top of offering a variety of viewing angles and heights to fit into just about any setup, it packs a 4K panel that’s backed by AMD FreeSync support, USB-C, HDMI, and DisplayPort connectivity. I’ve been using the 32-inch model since the start of the year and am a big fan of its overall design, especially the ergonomic mount. Rated 4.5/5 stars. Head below for more.

Update 6/29 @ 4:24 PM: Amazon now offers Dell’s all-new 34-inch WQHD Curved Gaming Monitor for $499.99 shipped. This marks the very first discount we’ve ever tracked, down from the usual $500 fare. It features a 34-inch 1800R curved screen with 1440p resolution, 1ms crisp or 2ms Gray-to-Gray response, and a 90% DCI-P3 color gamut.

Save even more when you opt for the 27-inch 1440p version of LG Ergo Monitor at $347 instead. While you’re getting much of the same unique mounted design as found above, the display resolution drops from 4K down to 1440p. Though if that isn’t going to be a deal-breaker, the added savings will let you upgrade the workstation in much the same manner as the lead deal.

While you’re upgrading things at the home office, be sure to have a look at the all-new Razer Book 13, which is seeing its very first discount at $101 off. This laptop is more than capable of handling work tasks throughout the day before switching over to run AAA titles in your battlestation at night. You’ll also want to check out all of the price cuts in this HP 4th of July Sale, as well.

LG 27-inch Ergo 4K UltraFine Monitor features:

This display also features a native resolution of 3840 x 2160 with In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology, support for 1.07 billion colors with HDR10 and AMD Radeon FreeSync, a 16:9 aspect ratio, an anti-glare coating, a typical contrast ratio of 1000:1, a brightness of 350 cd/m2, and a 5 ms (GtG) response time. Using the 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles, it is possible to watch content from virtually any position. This display has two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 port, and one USB Type-C port that supports 60W of power delivery. Additional connectivity may be accomplished using two 5 Gb/s USB Type-A ports, while audio can be output using the 3.5mm headphone jack or the dual 5W speakers.

The LG BX OLED - one of the best TVs for PS5 and Series X - is at a new low price - Eurogamer.net

lg.indah.link

Less than £900 for a top gaming TV.

Update: While the original eBay offer has now expired, the discount on the LG BX at RGB Direct is still available.

Original story: The LG BX OLED has been reduced to one of the lowest prices we've seen so far. The excellent gaming TV is now £864.

lg_bx_oled

The BX is an older model of the LG C1 and CX OLEDs that now sit atop Digital Foundry's list of the best TVs for gaming. Nevertheless, the BX is still an excellent choice for 4K gaming at 120Hz on PS5 and Xbox Series X, especially when it comes at such a considerable discount compared to the two newer TVs.

This price will only be available until the end of the day, though, as you'll need to make use of the latest eBay voucher that expires at midnight. Simply enter the code SAVE15 at the checkout and you'll save £75 off the list price from the Hughes Direct shop.

That's the same voucher code that can be used on a number of games and accessories such as Mario Golf: Super Rush and Scarlet Nexus.

If that offer has expired by the time you see this - or you're partial to a bargain bucket or two every now and then - you may instead want to check out a similar offer on the very same TV.

From now until 15th July, you can use the code BANK60 to get the 55-inch LG BX OLED for £899 at RGB Direct.

It's slightly more expensive than the eBay deal but, as an added bonus, you'll also get a £50 Deliveroo voucher included for free. With that, you can get the pizzas in and truly put the TV to the test with 4K games, a UHD movie or another torturous England performance at the Euros if they make it to the quarterfinals.

For more offers you can always pop over to Jelly Deals, where we've taken a look at some of the best 55-inch TVs and other top tech bargains. You're more than welcome to follow us on Twitter as well for even more of the best discounts from across the net.

LG’s C1 and G1 OLEDs get even better at gaming with 120Hz Dolby Vision - The Verge

lg.indah.link

With Dolby Vision gaming HDR technology available on Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, some TV owners have noticed that suddenly there’s a new setting to worry over. While some HDMI 2.1-equipped 4K displays could handle 120Hz, and some can support Dolby Vision for gaming, at first there weren’t any that could do both things at once.

Now LG has confirmed it’s the first manufacturer with Dolby Vision HDR at 4K 120Hz support on some of its TVs, just a couple of weeks after owners noticed it arriving in updates. The 03.15.27 firmware enables the feature on C1 and G1 2021 OLED TVs, and today LG says support is on the way for other premium TVs in its 2021 lineup.

Additional premium models in LG’s 2021 TV lineup such as OLED Z1 series, QNED Mini LED QNED99 series and NanoCell NANO99 series TVs will also receive the update in July. Additional 2021 and 2020 TV models are also being tested for Dolby Vision gaming in either 60Hz or 120Hz.

The press release wasn’t specific about support for previous years, but the company has said to Forbes that beta software with 4K/120Hz support is coming to other 4K TVs including last year’s CX and BX models. There’s no word yet on any update for 2019 OLED TVs.

All of this is happening before the first Dolby Vision HDR-enabled games are available, which we believe should help gamers automatically configure their brightness and image settings to match the TV’s capabilities. As the company behind the technology explains, “Dolby Vision games automatically map to your Dolby Vision display as you play, so you’re always seeing the full picture.” Microsoft has said it means you’ll see “brighter highlights, sharper contrast, and more vibrant colors,” although how that applies to other HDR games is harder to tell.

The new firmware also adds Game Dashboard, a floating menu that should help LG owners configure their TVs and see which settings are enabled. It works on any 2021 LG TV with Game Optimizer, and can show the status of the TV’s black stabilizer, low latency and variable refresh rate (VRR), or flip between settings tuned for specific genres. Samsung was first with a game bar feature on its 2021 TVs, but with something this useful we hope more manufacturers pick up the idea.

[MWC 2021] LG announces support for Facebook's Portal TV - Techaeris

lg.indah.link

With MWC 2021 kicking off this week, LG has announced that its Smart TVs with WebOS version 6.0 will be updated with support for Facebook’s Portal TV. For those who aren’t familiar with Portal TV, it’s basically a video calling service connected to your Facebook account.

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

With a small additional piece of hardware, users can connect to Portal TV and use their big screen to conduct video calls and conferences. LG says that this update “offers more convenience for LG TV owners when connecting and using Portal TV to keep in close contact with family, friends, even coworkers.”

Here is what the rest of LG’s press release had to say about this soon to come feature:

Facebook Portal TV on LG TVs Techaeris
The hardware

LG TV users will benefit from Portal TV’s smooth integration that includes extremely easy setup and LG Magic Remote compatibility. Initial setup is hassle-free, requiring only plugging the Portal TV HDMI cable into the LG Smart TV.

The Portal device will be detected immediately and display a pop-up notice on the screen, providing quick access from the webOS home screen or Home Dashboard. Video call functionality can be controlled directly from the LG Magic Remote, its four-directional keys acting as command keys allowing users to control it similarly to the dedicated Portal TV remote control.

Once connected, users can make video calls to family and friends on Messenger and WhatsApp. Portal TV also supports Messenger Rooms, as well as Zoom, Workplace, and GoToMeeting, which are useful when working from home. Portal TV also features Story Time, which brings stories to life during video calls with animations, music, and AR effects.

Portal’s Smart Camera automatically pans and zooms so users can talk and move freely. Smart Camera widens the view automatically when a new participant steps into the frame. Smart Sound enhances the speaker’s voice during video calls while minimizing background noise.

Portal was created with privacy, safety, and security in mind with clear and simple settings, so users stay in control. When not in use, LG TV owners can disable the camera and microphone on Portal with the sliding switch. A red light on the front of the Portal device indicates when the microphone and camera are turned off. Users can also use the included camera cover to block Portal TV’s camera when not in use.

LG

For those who like this Facebook service and want to have access to it in their living room, this is a neat additional feature. For those who don’t want it, if you update you’ll get the feature, just don’t login to your Facebook account or set anything up and you should be fine.

What is LG OLED evo? - TechRadar

lg.indah.link

What is LG OLED evo? The new panel technology is whipping up a storm in today’s OLED TV market, by improving manufacturing methods to increase the brightness output possible in an OLED display.

OLED TVs are, by and large, capable premium screens – though their relatively dim brightness compared to high-end LCD and QLED TVs remains a sore point for many, especially those who tend to watch in well-lit rooms or during daytime hours. While an OLED TV may be ideal for a dedicated home theater room, the realities of some homes mean that a bright LCD display can often be more practical.

That’s all changing with the arrival of OLED evo, which is how LG describes the unique panel used in its LG G1 Gallery Series flagship.

But how does OLED evo actually work, and how much of a difference does it really make?

What is OLED evo?

OLED evo is how LG Electronics refers to the brightness-enhanced OLED panel technology used in its 2021 flagship, the LG G1.

LG tells us directly that “LG OLED evo is a combination of a new panel and optimised processing, available exclusively in G1-series. OLED evo technology is the next step in the evolution of LG OLED that delivers better luminosity for higher brightness and punchy images with amazing clarity, detail, and realism.”

The panel itself improves on LG’s regular OLEDs “with an added layer made of stronger emissive material that refines the wavelengths of light and as a result, increases efficiency and improves brightness with the same amount of light input. The materials used for OLED lighting have also been changed to enhance and strengthen light intensity and this is what delivers the brighter, sharper images.”

We’re also told that the OLED evo panel was specifically designed for the “optimised processing within the Alpha 9 Gen 4 Processor,” meaning you wouldn’t necessarily get the same results with the cheapest a7 (Alpha 7) chipset range used in the LG B1 and LG A1.

LG's Alpha 7 processor

LG's cheaper Alpha 7 processor won't be working with OLED evo anytime soon (Image credit: LG)

How bright does OLED evo actually go?

OLED evo is said to increase peak brightness by 20% – a notable uptick given the usual brightness of OLED screens, which lags far behind the 1,000 nits used to master HDR (high dynamic range) content.

OLED evo doesn’t currently have the capabilities to get to 1,000 nits, but it certainly gets closer. In our LG G1 review, we recorded a peak brightness reading of “just over 870 nits” rather than the “754 nits of last year’s GX range.”

We noted that “the peak brightness reduces by 100 nits or so when you shift from the (inadvisable) Vivid picture preset to Standard,” meaning those gains aren’t entirely felt in more commonly-used picture modes. The extent of the G1 brightness improvement versus the GX, though, tends to be between 10% and 20% across all picture presets.”

The difference isn’t seismic, but the LG G1 is certainly a better friend to high dynamic range imagery than any LG OLED before it.

Will other LG OLED TVs get OLED evo panels?

LG wouldn’t be drawn on plans to implement OLED evo into its other television ranges, like the C Series, B Series or A Series, telling us that “LG is unable to comment on the next stage of product development regarding increased brightness in future models.”

However, we can predict a likely rollout of OLED evo based on the expansion of the 48-inch OLED TV size that first released last year.

At first, the LG CX was the only OLED TV on the market to come in a 48-inch size, followed shortly by the Sony A9S and Philips OLED+935. In 2021, though, it’s a bit more common, coming to both the LG C1 and entry-level A1 – with options for both a premium model and a more affordable one.

We expect to see OLED evo return in the Gallery Series model next year – likely named the ‘G2’ – though it could always come to the C Series, or even the 8K OLED TV (Z Series) for truly high-end buyers.

Currently, the LG G1 OLED is the only OLED evo model (Image credit: LG)

Are other TV brands using OLED evo?

So far, you’ll only get OLED evo with LG Electronics – which makes sense, given its close relationship with OLED panel supplier LG Display. However, we do expect that to change relatively soon, if just to make sure LG Display can start producing OLED evo at a larger (and more cost-effective) scale.

We recently reported that researchers at the University of Michigan have developed a new electrode that can "liberate" more light from self-emissive OLED panels – at the same time as increasing energy efficiency and improving the battery life of portable OLED displays (smartphones and the like).

The new design replaces a typically transparent module with a 5nm silver layer (on a copper base) that better directs light and ensures less light is lost in the transition between the panel’s diodes and the glass surface above them. The study’s authors claim that they recorded a 20% brightness increase, but predict that a 40% increase would be possible for manufacturers too.

It’s that 40% increase that would really help OLED TVs compete with the brightness of QLED screens. And while brightness isn’t everything – contrast, black levels, color accuracy and processing all playing a huge part in determining a set’s picture quality – ridding OLED of this weak spot would certainly help to elevate the technology in the face of the Mini LED and Micro LED displays now entering the market.

LG TVs will soon gain dedicated support for Facebook's Portal TV - Engadget

lg.indah.link

Facebook's webcam-like Portal TV mounts on your existing TV set to provide an immersive video calling experience on apps like Messenger and Zoom, provided you're willing to allow the social network into your living room. Now, LG has made it easier to install one on its webOS-powered TVs with a new firmware update, the company announced

LG TVs can't run Portal TV by themselves. However, with the latest webOS 6.0 firmware, you'll just need to plug one into the HDMI port and it will be detected and display a pop-up notice (as shown below), allowing for quick access from the dashboard or webOS home screen. From there, you'll be able to control the Portal TV app directly from LG's Magic Remote without the need to dig up your Portal TV remote.

LG updates its TVs to work better with Facebook Portal TV video calling

LG

You can make video calls on Facebook's own Messenger and WhatsApp apps, as well as Zoom, Workplace and GoToMeeting for business or personal video calls. Portal TV's smart camera will automatically pan and zoom to follow you around the room, or widen the view to accommodate new participants. The smart sound feature enhances your voice while minimizing background noise.

You might not be crazy about the idea of a camera from Facebook in your home, but it could be useful for seniors or technophobes who find it difficult to do video calls on PCs or smartphones. LG's latest update could help in that regard by making it easier for such folks to set it up without help.

Colts LG Nelson holds NFT auction for 'Blocking Cancer' initiative - WISHTV.com

lg.indah.link

(WISH) — As Quenton Nelson prepares to enter his fourth season with the Colts, he’s using his platform to help give back.

The guard will be auctioning off digital artwork of some iconic moments of his career with the Horseshoe, including that iconic keg stand celebration. The majority of the money raised will be donated to the V Foundation in support of cancer research.

“I mean the biggest reason why I chose to do this is to give back to the V Foundation,” Nelson said. “I’m really excited to give back to such an amazing charity like that. And then it also gives the fans a way to interact with me. Whether it’s VIP tickets to my charity softball game that’s going to kick off next summer or a ticket to the private V Foundation dinners.”

The winning bidders will also score an invite to a private dinner with Nelson on July 7 in Indianapolis. You can take a look at artwork being auctioned off here.

LG wants to sell iPhones in its stores, and Samsung doesn't like it - TechSpot

lg.indah.link

A hot potato: After withdrawing from making smartphones, LG is facing the question of what to do with the floor space and personnel previously dedicated to handhelds at its "Best Shop" physical locations, of which there are about 400 across South Korea. The plan is to start selling Apple iPhones, which fellow Korean giant Samsung is understandably upset by.

As reported by Business Korea, LG have been looking to stock Apple products at its Best Shop brick-and-mortar stores, which continue to sell other LG products such as high-end TVs after the company's departure from the phone market.

Now, apparently Samsung has stepped in, citing an agreement signed in May 2018 that restricted manufacturers to sell only LG phones at LG shops and Samsung phones at their own retail locations. Selling Apple phones would violate this agreement, but LG claims that renegotiation can take place in the case of a major change in circumstances.

It's safe to say that LG exiting the phone business entirely is a pretty significant change. Meanwhile, the association responsible is concerned about the impact on smaller phone distributors, which the agreement was meant to protect, though it's agreed that renegotiation is necessary.

LG's physical retail presence in Korea is significant, so it's understandable that Samsung feels threatened by the move, especially as Apple have jumped to lead the market with a 29.8% share of 5G phones with its iPhone 12 series alone. Samsung currently sits back in joint fourth place for 5G handsets. Samsung is allegedly trying to lean on the big three South Korean mobile carriers -- SK Telecom, KT Corp, and LG U+ -- to push for its own phones to appear in Best Shops too.

Samsung may be stuck between a rock and a hard place with these plans. Sharing shelf space in Best Shops would give LG a cut of the income from its latest and greatest Galaxy devices, as well as potentially cannibalize sales from its own physical stores -- but the alternative is allowing Apple products to be sold uncontested at over 400 new locations from the start of August, just in time for the iPhone 13 to arrive in September.

Talks are still underway between LG-Magna venture and Apple
By Kim Yoo-chul

In business, chief competitors are basically frenemies, as seen in the complicated Samsung-Apple partnership. Samsung needs Apple as the iPhone designer orders lots of components, while Apple also needs Samsung as it can reliably produce lots of semiconductors for its gadgets.

Unlike the high-profile Samsung-Apple partnership, LG is seeking a "next-level" partnership with Apple, from a mere supplier-client partnership to a substantial client-client partnership, amid the South Korean company's ongoing shift towards electronic vehicle supply chain-focused business-to-business (B2B) segment.

Sources said LG Electronics plans to sell Apple iPhones at the firm's nationwide retail shops branded as LG Best Shop. LG was in talks with Apple to finalize some "outstanding issues" before the release of Apple devices ― excluding its computer lineup ― at its authorized local distributors in August this year.

Of course, LG Electronics said "nothing has been decided." Sources said LG has no option but to sell Apple's core products here, as it can't afford to lose its edge in mobile marketing activities despite its withdrawal from the handset business.

As LG Electronics will only be granted the right for the sale of Apple products at the company-owned stores with Apple handling and managing warranty policies, LG Electronics' de facto approvals will help Apple better compete with Samsung Electronics for more mobile sales in the Korean market.

In terms of the total market size, Korea is not such an important market for Apple from its viewpoint. But Apple is pushing ahead for improved sales of 5G-embedded devices with Korean carriers as a litmus test before advancing other target markets. LG Electronics' Best Shop has over 400 locations across the country and it is set to complete needed procedures regarding the withdrawal of its mobile business within the next month.

The central point is this possibility follows the upcoming launch of LG Magna e-Powertrain, LG's vehicle component joint venture with Magna International. Given LG's strengths in core electric vehicle (EV) components such as displays, batteries and motors and its long-time reliable partnerships with its tech affiliates, chances are high the LG-Magna venture will win an initial volume of Apple EVs.

"Talks are still underway between the LG-Magna venture and Apple in terms of addressing outstanding issues and differentiation regarding the specifics for the production of first-generation Apple EVs," a top-ranking industry executive said by telephone, Sunday. In April, The Korea Times was the first to report that Apple was "very close" to signing an agreement with the LG-Magna venture.

"Because of the withdrawal of it smartphone business, LG is assigned and asked to fill in the void of its mobile departure. Given its strength in automotive parts, winning even a small volume of Apple EVs would help the company build momentum in assisting the group's top management initiatives at the growing EV-related businesses," another industry executive said.

LG Energy Solution trails only China's CATL for the top spot in EV batteries. LG Display operates "Apple-designated" panel lines in Gumi and Paju, regional cities in South Korea, while LG Innotek supplies camera modules to Apple and onboard cameras for vehicles.

India flex-fuel, robotaxis, LG/Magna EV JV - the week - just-auto.com

The Apollo Moon robotaxi

India is considering making flex-fuel engines mandatory for automakers, according to remarks made by a government minister. Local media reports have cited Union minister Nitin Gadkari saying that a decision to confirm the move will be taken within ten days. He said the move – which would see cheaper bio-ethanol supplied for automotive use – would help farmers and boost the Indian economy. Bakar Sadik Agwan, senior automotive consulting analyst at GlobalData, said the latest development comes two weeks after the government brought forward the cut-off date for 20% ethanol blending petrol program (E20) from 2030 to 2025. The production mandate for ‘all flex-fuels vehicles’, if implemented, will be a major milestone in the Indian automotive sector but it will have its own sets of benefits and challenges. “The government’s swift attention to biofuels is a result of the increasing economic burden attributable to high crude-based fuel prices recently,” Agwan says. “India has a surplus of feedstock required for ethanol production, ensuring adequate supply for fuel production. Increase in ethanol blending can help the government to reduce oil imports, reduce carbon emission and curb fuel prices.” Agwan notes that there has been a push by the government in the past to increase ethanol blending in petrol for cost and environmental benefits. The National Policy on Biofuels, approved in 2018, aims at blending 10% ethanol in petrol by 2022 and 20% by 2025. Presently, about 8.5% of ethanol is mixed with petrol.

Chinese internet services giant Baidu is partnering with BAIC Group’s EV brand ARCFOX to jointly release Apollo Moon, a new generation of robotaxis that are set to be mass-produced with a per unit manufacturing price of RMB 480,000. The companies say the vehicle will be one third of the cost of average L4 autonomous vehicles and that Apollo Moon is a ‘monumental milestone in the large-scale commercialization of fully autonomous ride-hailing services in the smart transportation industry’. Apollo Moon has a projected operating cycle of over five years and it is planned it will provide dependable long-term robotaxi ride-hailing services. It is claimed the reduced cost of production will facilitate a greater degree of scalability, driving the widespread popularisation and increasing commercialisation of fully autonomous ride-hailing services in China. “As early as 2017, Baidu and BAIC Group entered into a strategic partnership. Both sides share the same goals and insist on independent R&D to promote the development of autonomous driving in China. The launch of Apollo Moon is an important breakthrough signifying the powerful linkage between China’s leading autonomous driving technology and the most advanced smart vehicle platform, marking a landmark step in the field of robotaxi ride-hailing services globally,” said Zhenyu Li, Senior Corporate Vice President of Baidu and General Manager of Intelligent Driving Group (IDG). At the press conference, Baidu and ARCFOX – the high-end brand of EVs under BAIC Group – reached a new strategic cooperation agreement to roll out a fleet of 1,000 Apollo Moon robotaxis in three years.

Faurecia’s Foundation is to sponsor 11 projects worldwide. For the second year in a row, Faurecia’s Foundation has launched an internal call for projects, mobilising employees across the group. Ideas submitted had to fall into the three focuses of the Foundation: equal access to education, social inclusion through mobility and environment conservation. Following a first round of selection in countries, a shortlist of 30 initiatives was presented to the foundation’s selection committee; out of which 11 projects were validated by its board. The new batch of projects comes on top of the three pilots launched last year in India, Morocco, and Mexico.

LG Electronics and Canadian auto components manufacturer Magna International are in the final stages of establishing a new electric vehicle (EV) powertrain joint venture, according to reports in South Korea, citing an industry insider. The joint venture was first announced at the end of last year with LG shareholders in March 2021 voting in favour of the deal which will give the South Korean electronics giant a 51% stake in the new company. The two partners are currently in the process of selecting their respective board members for the new company, which is expected to be called LG Magna e-Powertrain Company. LG is expected to appoint three members, including the chief executive officer (CEO) and Magna two, based on the agreed shareholder structure. LG is scheduled to spin off its EV powertrain operations into the new company on 1 July with Magna set to acquire a 49% stake for US$453m on the same day.

Subaru Motor said it would cut production at its Gunma plants in Japan in July due to a global shortage of semiconductors. “It is part of the production adjustment due to shortage of semiconductors,” a Subaru spokesman said. The plants would be idle on 16 July. Separately, Suzuki Motor said it was considering slashing production in July at its Kosai and Sagara plants in Shizuoka, Japan, for two and seven days, respectively.

Ford has named former Renault group executive Franck Louis-Victor as head of the company’s new businesses platform. Louis-Victor, 48, will start with Ford on 1 July and will be accountable for developing and executing a comprehensive strategic plan that includes the company’s existing and emerging portfolio of capabilities in areas like autonomous vehicles and mobility services, as well as the incubator, Ford X. “We’re accelerating development of disruptive technologies and focusing on being a leader in areas that enhance always-on relationships with customers and give them increasing freedom of movement,” said Ford president and CEO Jim Farley. “Franck’s got great experience that will help his team nurture new ideas through the start-up phase with the best opportunities launched on their own or integrated into our business units.”

Visteon and Qualcomm Technologies said Geely Auto’s new Xingyue L flagship SUV would be the first production vehicle to use their co-developed intelligent cockpit. This integrates Visteon’s SmartCore cockpit domain controller with the third generation Qualcomm Snapdragon automotive cockpit platforms into ECARX’s intelligent cockpit system and the three companies claimed to have established a new benchmark for integrated cockpits. Using the Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit Platforms, Visteon’s SmartCore supports various human machine interface (HMI) functions to provide drivers and passengers a variety of personalised information and services. The intelligent cockpit can also receive feature upgrades wirelessly over-the-air, eliminating the need to replace hardware to further extend the platform’s lifecycle. The Xingyue L SUV made its debut at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show and is the first production vehicle to feature this cockpit.

Audi is using AI to monitor its supply chain and provide early warning of issues. Since October 2020, Audi has been using what it terms ‘intelligent algorithms’ to analyse news about suppliers from publicly available online media sources and social networks as part of a pilot project being conducted in around 150 countries worldwide. This analysis encompasses sustainability criteria such as environmental pollution, human rights violations, and corruption. If there is any suspicion of potential sustainability violations, artificial intelligence sounds the alarm. The ‘sustainability radar’ is designed to uncover violations at an early stage and initiate appropriate consequences. In 2020, more than 13,000 suppliers provided the Volkswagen Group with a self-assessment of their own sustainability performance. More than 800 suppliers were audited on site, and more than 1,300 have improved their sustainability performance and now meet Audi’s stringent standards.

As it faces a shake-up to powertrain mix, especially diesel-powered SUVs, JLR’s fuel cell plans are a way to keep strategic powertrain options open. With battery electric vehicle (BEV) hype at its zenith, a casual observer could be forgiven for thinking the pathway to vehicle fleet electrification is closed. While most companies are following the lead established by Tesla and are powering their EVs using on-board batteries charged from an external grid, a handful are also developing fuel-cell-powered EVs that generate power directly within the vehicle – early adopters include Toyota, Honda and Hyundai. Now, Land Rover has confirmed that it will launch a fuel-cell-powered Defender prototype in 2022 to further investigate the technology. Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) offer a number of advantages compared with battery-powered electric vehicles. Crucially, FCEVs can be rapidly refuelled with hydrogen when they deplete their on-board storage – this negates the range anxiety of battery EVs and effectively means FCEVs’ range is only limited by the refuelling infrastructure that supports them. In addition, an EV with a fuel cell is usually lighter than an equivalent EV with a battery pack – this weight saving improves driving range and eats up less of the vehicle’s maximum permissible weight, allowing for more cargo capacity. This weight saving is why the likes of Land Rover and BMW etc with mid- and full-size SUVs are exploring FCEV possibilities.

It’s not here yet, but quantum computing promises a big leap in computing power and capability to manage huge data sets, including in the automotive sector. In Lisbon, VW worked with D-Wave on a pilot project for traffic optimisation with a quantum computer. Over the past year, the journalistic jargon surrounding the automotive industry increasingly presents the vehicles of tomorrow as ‘computers on wheels’. This characterisation has no doubt been fuelled by the global semiconductor shortage, which has harshly spotlighted the dependency of the sector on computing hardware. However, most of the chips affected by the current shortage concern lower-grade specifications, such as microcontrollers and system on chips (SoC) for automotive electronic control units (ECUs) and displays. Fixating on the shortage and the ‘computer on wheels’, as important as they are, may, therefore, actually divert attention from more consequential, high-grade developments in quantum computing (QC) which could revolutionize the automotive industry. The ‘computer on wheels’ metaphor also misses the potential of a computing revolution within and across the industry’s value chain (where investments are also more likely to tangibly pay off).

Analysis of May’s light vehicle markets shows recovery continued, but it is fragile and coming off a very low base. Global light vehicle sales increased 36.2% in May, but in the recovery phase an eye on SAAR remains more important. For SAAR it was the continued story of ‘one-step forward and then two-steps back’. After March and April’s strong showing the global market regressed to the hesitant levels of January and February with a SAAR of 80.8m recorded, the lowest level since January and February. Despite the positive year-on-year gains it was largely a disappointing month for sales. The SAAR for most regions – excluding North America – slipped back markedly in May demonstrating the fragility of the recovery in most markets. In Asia, the decline in SAAR was unsurprisingly most obvious in India as the country battled its 2nd wave of infections. In general, May’s market finished below GlobalData’s expectations for the month. Our model baked in a 42% gain for the month, marginally stronger than the month’s 36% outcome.

Have a nice weekend.

Report: Samsung is pressuring LG to also sell Galaxy phones at its stores, not just iPhones - GSMArena.com news - GSMArena.com

lg.indah.link

LG’s plans to sell iPhones at LG Best Shop locations in South Korea is facing opposition. Samsung is upset by this and claims such a move would violate an agreement signed by the two companies in 2018, which states that only LG-made phones can be sold at LG-run shops and similarly only Samsung phones can be sold at Samsung shops (this agreement was meant to protect small and mid-sized stores from the two giants).

However, LG is pointing to a clause in the agreement that says that it can be renegotiated in case of major change. And things did indeed change majorly when LG exited the mobile business. The association that initiated the agreement is also questioning LG’s move, but an official agreed that a renegotiation should follow given the circumstances.

Samsung fears that iPhones becoming available at the 400+ LG shops around Korea will threaten the market share of its 5G smartphones. Apple is the largest vendor of 5G phones globally, Samsung is fourth (though growing the fastest). And there are new all-5G iPhone models coming in September or October, just after the LG/Apple deal is supposed to go live (on August 1, allegedly).

Report: Samsung is pressuring LG to also sell Galaxy phones at it stores, not just iPhones

Speaking of, the original plan was to sell iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches (no Macs, though, as LG didn’t want competition for its own computers). The latest report is that this has been revised to selling just iPhones.

Samsung is trying to apply pressure to LG indirectly by asking Korea’s three big carriers (among which is LG U+) to demand that LG also carries Galaxy phones in the Best Shop locations. Of course, this deal might face some internal opposition as it can take sales away from Samsung stores.
